Amid Rising Diplomatic Tensions, Document Forgery Deepens the Struggles of Undocumented Algerians in France

As relations between Paris and Algiers reach unprecedented tension, undocumented Algerians in France are facing mounting hardships. Many resort to using forged documents to enter the job market amidst increasingly strict legal conditions.

The French-language newspaper “DNA Algérie” highlighted the alarming phenomenon of forged European identity cards, warning of the severe legal and humanitarian consequences.

A specialized lawyer explained that using forged documents for employment or to request a “Carte Vitale” constitutes a serious violation of French law, punishable by immediate deportation and long-term bans from reentry. Once forgery is discovered, any chance of legal regularization becomes almost impossible.

While a few prefectures occasionally show leniency for cases driven by extreme necessity, these exceptions remain rare and uncertain.

The newspaper noted that French authorities now employ sophisticated electronic verification systems capable of detecting even the slightest discrepancies, significantly increasing the risks associated with document forgery.

Additionally, the escalating diplomatic crisis, notably after Algeria refused in March 2025 to accept a list of sixty nationals slated for deportation, has further complicated the situation.

In the midst of this standoff, political voices in France are calling for tougher immigration policies towards Algeria, while Algiers demands respect for mutual sovereignty.

In this challenging environment, undocumented Algerians are faced with tough choices: either endure years of waiting for possible legalization or risk forgery, with the looming threat of permanent expulsion.
