Clarification from the U.S. Embassy in Libya

The U.S. Embassy in Libya issued a tweet distancing itself from a statement widely circulated yesterday, which claimed that the United States rejects the decision by the Libyan House of Representatives to withdraw recognition from the Government of National Unity led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah. The embassy’s statement included the following:
“This fraudulent document presented as a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Libya is a fake. We reject the fraudulent use of the official letterhead of the U.S. Embassy in Libya to spread false information and attempt to mislead the Libyan people. It appears that the official letterhead was taken from a condolence letter issued by the embassy, which is extremely reprehensible. The United States’ position on the Libyan political process has not changed. The United States continues to fully support the UN-facilitated political process, based on dialogue and compromise among all Libyan parties and grounded in the principles of the Libyan Political Agreement and the Geneva process.”
