Morocco and Mauritania: Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to Develop the Electricity and Renewable Energy Sectors
On Thursday, January 23, 2025, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening their partnership in the fields of electricity and renewable energy.
The agreement was signed in Rabat by Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and Mauritania’s Minister of Energy, Mohamed Ould Khaled.
The signing ceremony, held at the ministry’s headquarters, was attended by several prominent figures, including Tarik M’Fadel, Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), Tarik Hamane, Director General of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), and Mauritanian officials responsible for electricity and renewable energy.
Mohamed Ould Khaled emphasized the importance of this agreement in strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two nations. He reiterated Mauritania’s commitment to deepening partnerships in the energy sector and working on joint projects.
The memorandum paves the way for new opportunities, including the exchange of expertise, the development of innovative technologies—particularly in low-carbon hydrogen—and the pursuit of funding for ongoing initiatives. The Mauritanian minister also encouraged the private sector in both countries to actively engage in these projects.
Both sides reaffirmed their determination to work together to build a sustainable energy future and called on their respective teams to implement concrete actions to achieve the goals of the memorandum.
