Tizi-Ouzou Under Siege
Special Correspondence from Tizi-Ouzou
The Algerian regime spared no effort to get the Kabyles to vote and break the 2019 boycott. However, it seems that nothing can overcome the will of free men and women.
To prevent any demonstrations that could disrupt the voting process or simply stop it from happening in Kabylia, an army of gendarmes with all kinds of mobile vehicles arrived in Tizi-Ouzou three days before the election.
Armored vehicles, riot control vehicles, and more than a thousand gendarmes on high alert were stationed at the university residences in Tamda. Around fifty school buses were prepared to transport demonstrators.
The region of Larba N’ath Iraten, which has endured the horrors of repression with 53 of its children sentenced to death, is the most heavily monitored.
In Kabylia, the atmosphere around the presidential election feels like a state of war—a war waged by the authorities against the people.
