France Imposes Visa Requirement on Algerian Diplomatic Passport Holders

As of May 17, 2025, Algerian holders of diplomatic or service passports must present a valid visa to enter France. The measure, ordered by the French National Police Directorate (DGPN), applies immediately at all air and sea border points. Non-compliant individuals will be denied entry and subject to removal.

The decision suspends the 2007 and 2013 bilateral agreements that had previously granted visa exemptions for short stays. According to internal instructions seen by Le Figaro and Le Parisien, French border agents must enforce the rule strictly and report any difficulties.

This move comes in retaliation for Algeria’s expulsion of over a dozen French officials in recent weeks, including the most recent on May 12. France had summoned the Algerian chargé d’affaires on May 14, calling Algeria’s actions “unjustified.”

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot described the visa requirement as “firm and proportionate.” Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau had previously announced a policy of “graduated response” following Algerian refusals to cooperate on deportations and diplomatic matters.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries remain frozen amid escalating tit-for-tat measures, with France warning it may impose further restrictions depending on developments.
