Nouakchott: Signing of the historic electricity interconnection agreement between Morocco and Mauritania
In line with the strategic directives of King Mohammed VI to promote regional energy cooperation and strengthen bilateral relations, a major electricity interconnection agreement was signed in Nouakchott on February 4, 2024.
The event brought together Tarik Hamane, Director General of the National Office of Electricity and Potable Water (ONEE), and Sidi Salem Mohamed El Abd, Director General of the Mauritanian Electricity Company (SOMELEC), in the presence of Hamid Chabar, Moroccan Ambassador to Mauritania.
A strategic project for energy integration
This agreement is part of the Royal Atlantic Initiative, aimed at strengthening African integration and South-South cooperation. The project aims to improve the stability and performance of the electrical networks in both countries, facilitating energy exchanges between Morocco, Mauritania, Europe, and West Africa through the West African Power Pool (WAPP).
ONEE emphasizes that this interconnection represents a strategic opportunity to harness the renewable energy resources available to both countries and maximize their energy complementarity.
Immediate implementation
Following the signing of the agreement, technical teams from ONEE and SOMELEC immediately began preparatory meetings to start the actual implementation of the project, demonstrating the shared determination of both countries to accelerate the realization of this ambitious initiative.
A key role in Africa’s energy landscape
This project strengthens Morocco and Mauritania’s role as strategic energy hubs on the continent. By enhancing electrical interconnections, it contributes to the integration of energy markets and supports sustainable, inclusive development.
This partnership reflects the positive dynamics of Moroccan-Mauritanian relations, embodying a shared vision for regional energy cooperation and mutual development.
