Statement by UN Experts on the Case of Poet Jamila Ben Touiss

UN experts issued a press statement today, Monday, September 30, 2024, regarding the case of Algerian poet Jamila Ben Touiss, who participated in the popular movement. This statement follows an accountability letter sent by the experts to the Algerian government last July, to which they received no response.

Position of UN Experts

The experts called for the overturning of the sentence against poet Jamila Ben Touiss and her acquittal of all charges against her, noting that the two-year prison sentence and the fine of 100,000 Algerian dinars were the result of her participation in the movement. They confirmed that the charges against her were directly related to her exercise of the right to freedom of expression, particularly artistic expression.

Criticism of Algerian Government Policies

The experts criticized the practices of the Algerian government aimed at silencing the protest movement through arbitrary detention and holding individuals who dare to speak out, noting that Jamila’s trial is part of laws that restrict freedom of expression and assembly in Algeria.

Background of the Case

Jamila Ben Touiss participated in the Algerian popular movement through her national poems, which were adopted by protesters and widely circulated on social media. The poet faced serious charges related to undermining state security and belonging to a terrorist entity, raising international concerns about the future of freedoms in Algeria.

Call for Her Release

The experts urged the release of Jamila Ben Touiss and the annulment of all charges against her, stating that her trial on terrorism charges undermines fundamental freedoms in the country. They expressed hope that Algeria would fulfill its international obligations and guarantee the right to freedom of expression when the appeal is heard on October 2, 2024.

The case of Jamila Ben Touiss reflects the ongoing tension between Algerian authorities and the popular movement, with serious implications for freedom of expression and art in Algeria.
