Strategic CAF Agreement Forces Algeria to Open Its Airspace to Moroccan Planes

In a historic step reinforcing Morocco’s growing presence on the African sports scene, Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has signed a strategic agreement with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), making it the official and exclusive carrier for all CAF competitions, including the men’s and women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The agreement was signed in Rabat, in the presence of Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Patrice Motsepe, President of CAF, and Abdelhamid Addou, CEO of Royal Air Maroc. It reflects the increasing confidence in Morocco’s organizational and logistical capacities, and aligns with the royal vision of strengthening South-South cooperation in Africa.
Algeria Faces a Dilemma Over Airspace Closure
This deal places Algeria in an awkward position, as CAF member countries are now required to allow RAM flights through their airspace, which Algeria has closed to Moroccan aviation since September 2021. Failure to comply could lead to serious consequences, including suspension from CAF tournaments, loss of important broadcasting revenues, and increasing continental isolation.
Morocco as a Diplomatic and Logistical Power
Through this partnership, Royal Air Maroc establishes itself as a strategic player in African sports logistics, responsible for transporting teams, delegations, and fans across the continent. The airline is expected to facilitate the arrival of over half a million supporters for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe hailed the agreement as a “historic moment for African football,” emphasizing its role in strengthening ties between member countries. He also highlighted Morocco’s impressive infrastructure, including the upcoming Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca, set to become one of the five largest stadiums in the world with a capacity of 115,000 seats.
Sport as a Bridge Between Nations
Abdelhamid Addou affirmed that the deal goes beyond a commercial venture, reflecting a pan-African vision supported by King Mohammed VI. He announced special offers for African supporters, including discounted fares, direct flights to major African capitals, and travel facilitation for African migrants living in Europe, the US, and the Middle East.
A Political Message Beneath the Surface
The agreement carries diplomatic weight, showcasing Morocco’s ability to leverage sports diplomacy as a tool for regional influence and cooperation even on sensitive matters like airspace sovereignty.
